Used Solar Panels: Are They Worth It?

Used Solar Panels: Are They Worth It?

We sell used panels. So we have a stake in this answer — but here is the honest breakdown of when used panels make sense and when they do not.

PROUDLY SERVING
EASTERN WA AND SURROUNDING AREAS.

WA Solar Depot is a veteran-owned and operated solar supply business in Oroville, Washington.

We began selling used solar panels out of our field in Oroville because we had a few extra, but then we saw a gap — people all over eastern Washington (and as far as Idaho) wanted to go off-grid, reduce their electric bills, or build backup power for their homes and properties. But nobody in the region was supplying panels at a reasonable price.

So we connected with our partner in California who decommissions utility-scale solar plants. These aren't broken or defective panels — they're fully functioning panels that came off large commercial installations when those installations were upgraded or retired. They have many years of useful life left. We found these panels pencil out well for off-grid enthusiasts and local families.

So far we've sold over 150kw of solar panels to local families. People drive from Spokane, Colville, Seattle, even from out of state. We weren't expecting that, but it tells us there's a real need we're filling.

Now we're building this out properly: a real website, more inventory, batteries, inverters, combiner boxes, and a long-term commitment to being eastern Washington's best solar supply source. Just panels, batteries, and hardware at prices that make sense.

System Efficiency: Accounts for inverter losses, wiring, and temperature derating. 80% is conservative and realistic for DIY setups.
Panel Life: Used panels from utility-scale plants still produce at 85–90% of rated wattage. No additional derating applied here.
